Hurricane Preparedness: What do I do with my wastes?

Hurricane season is officially in full effect and extremely active!  To date ALX does not have the technology to deter or stop storms, however we can help you prepare as it relates to managing your wastes to mitigate pollution.

  1. Track the storm.  Use NOAA or mobile apps like MyRadar to stay on top of its path.
  2. Review Inventory.  Take count of what wastes your facility is generating, especially industrial and/or hazardous wastes.
  3. Segregate and Consolidate Wastes.  Ensure all wastes are in appropriate waste management units and the same/like wastes are consolidated to reduce the number of waste management units in use.
  4. Schedule a Pick Up.  If possible, schedule a pick-up with your waste management vendor(s) to empty your waste containers and spill containment prior to the storm, even if you are not full.
  5. Onsite Storage.    When a pick-up is out of the question, it’s crucial to safely store your waste management containers.
    • Bring all waste management units and spill containment indoors.
    • If waste management units and containment cannot be placed indoors, place them against the building, preferably adjacent to L-shaped walls.  Removing them from open areas will reduce the chance of the items being windblown.  The dangers of storm winds are increased in open areas.
    • Use sandbags and other weighted options to anchor tanks and spill containment.
    • Ensure your containers are tightly sealed.
    • Clear out your secondary containment so that there is no release of chemical waste with the potential rainwater overflow.

Keep in mind that when it comes to the safety of employees and the entire facility, there are many other tasks to complete.  Here are some additional resources.
